My Key Elements in Decorating.

I’ve had many rooms over the years, and recently a close friend gave me the idea of sharing the history behind these rooms and my decorating process. Well, I’ll try my best! Read on for the details of what I try to incorporate into my room when I’m decorating. I’ll share snippets and/or a tour of my current room in a seperate post possibly.

I really feel like I’ve found my style as far as decorating goes. My first couple rooms didn’t represent me at all. My childhood room which I had up till the end of high school – was painted burgundy with a teddy bear border… a highschool girls nightmare! And, my second room after that was a beautiful pink room but my decor was a tad lackluster. I mean, they weren’t terrible, just not the style I was perhaps envisioning?

(I tried to dig up some photos which will be at the bottom!)

When I’m styling/decorating my room I tend to take five things into consideration and run with them. Pops of colour, plants, books, pillows (and bedding!) and artwork. Oh, and an extra one just for fun: little miscellaneous knick knacks! Gotta love them!

My colour of choice is hot pink, it just makes me happy! I’ve collected gizmos and gadgets of plenty in this colour and have always just haphazardly thrown them around my room while decorating. Okay, okay – I put more thought into it, but if you look around you’ll see a few pops of pink! Whether it’s a painting, chair, coaster, jewelry holder, pom poms, pillow, or a piece of embroidery hoop art! What’s your go to colour and do you use it to decorate with?

I love plants – always have and always will! I wasn’t always a green thumb though (I’ve killed my share of plants!) but I’m learning and getting better! I now have a beautiful elephant ear plant (thanks to my friend Jennifer!) a rubber plant, a snake plant and another one which I can’t remember the name of. All in all, I think every room should have some plants – faux or not! Are you a plant connoisseur?

Books are an absolute necessity in decorating a room! They just add so much character, especially if they’re vintage hardcovers. I try to collect hardcovers only as I feel they age better. Coffee table books are also some of my favourites to collect. What kind of books do you collect? And, how do you organize them? I tend to organize by colour.

What’s a room/apartment without a multitude of pillows? They’re so comfy, pretty, and fun! They add a ton of character especially with different patterns and textures. Please ignore the “yolo” pillow – it came with a bed set of mine, and I promptly donated it. Ugh. I filmed a video of all my pillows at the time on my YouTube channel. Here’s the pillows video. Bedding also falls under this category – which I equally love. I can’t quite number how many sets I’ve had over the years.

I’ve really collected my share of artwork for frame walls over the years – there’s no shortage in that department! I have canvas’ from friends, family, and local artists, magazine clippings, artwork from penpals, postcards, photographs, cards, decorated envelopes, embroidery hoop art, string art, old vintage records, bunting, and much more!

I’ll let you in on my secret for a good frame wall. I don’t measure or level things out. I do lay things out on the floor to get an idea of where and how to place things, but I don’t meticulously cut out pieces of paper to represent the frames and such for the gallery wall as recommended by the pros. I once used push pins and a candle jar to put up a frame wall – but you didn’t read that. Haha.

I love adding quirky little items like: faux plants, colourful bottles/vases, snow globes, and super hero figurines! Some others include: Pop Funkos, cat figurines, crochet items, framed artwork, candles, magnets etc. I also love a good letter sign.

And, now… the long awaited (and promised) photo of my past rooms, I couldn’t find the photo of when we first moved into the house with the burgundy room (it’s a cute one!!) but here’s me posing on the day of my high school graduation. I loved the pink room, but my decor was lackluster in my opinion.

  1. I’m a maximalist in the process of being a minimalist – or an essentialist at best.
