What’s Normal?

I just noticed that for a blog called “Musings of a Brunette” I don’t often write down my thoughts/musings -so here we go! I’m often told I’m a sunny, happy, positive, inspirational person – and I try to be. But everyone has their tough moments – I’m not always myself. It’s Life.  I’ve noticed lately that it’s hard to agree on what’s considered “being normal” – some say it’s just like a cycle on the washing machine.  Others say that there is no “normal”.

nor·mal/ˈnôrməl

Adjective: Conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.

As for me, I believe that everyone is normal in their own way – the same way that everyone is also a bit bipolar too. (I’m using the term loosely here – I am not making fun of being “bipolar” in anyway.)  Does that make sense?  Everyone has their days where if they haven’t had enough sleep, enough coffee, or enough food – they’re miserable, or “off”. Sometimes you just catch some people at the wrong time.  But they aren’t always like that (hopefully!), their mood goes up and down – and it’s just a normal cycle. So the next time you catch yourself asking “Am I Normal?” remember that you’re normal in your own way.   Whatever attributes, skills, imperfections, flaws you have, they are what makes you special – so embrace yourself.  You’re beautiful.  You’re Unique. You’re Normal.

I recently opened up about my disorder (bipolar disorder) to an old friend, and found out that we were quite alike and going through the same things.  So it goes to show, that everyone is going through something and whatever it is – it’s normal!  Don’t be afraid to open up about your disorder, or tough situations to someone (make sure you trust them though)  you’d be surprised at who’s going through the same difficulties and you could be able to help each other out.

Hope you enjoyed my thoughts, this is totally something different, so I’m not too sure if I’ll continue or not? WDYT?

  1. Great post. Check out mine about my sensitive daughter a few weeks back. I was also writing about what is so great about being “normal” and why do we aspire to it? Love the graphics you found to go with your post (I hunted for ages for something like this but couldn’t find anything!)

    1. Thanks lovely!! I read that post, and I think you’re a beautiful and amazing mother. I would have reacted the same by freaking out at first and researching things – and you definitely handled it very well!! Being “normal” is over-rated eh?! Thanks again! I’m a perfectionist so I didn’t post this until I found something, haha!

  2. Hi Natalie… as you may noticed I’m back on the reading and I have to catch up on your blog 😉
Lovely toughts… totally agree with you. I have BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder)… but I don’t think because of some label I or anyone is far from “normal” because every person is totally unique and at the same time we all have happy moments, sad moments, confused moments… we are humans.
