A Thrifty Christmas

Merry Christmas to me! My friend and I went thrifting the other day and came back with all sorts of things. Considering we don’t have much of a variety here, when it comes to thrift stores, I think we did pretty well.  I’m hoping to find some great thrift stores on our next roaptrip! Anyone know of any thrift stores in Canada?

I got a scarf for $1.99, a Louisa May Alcott hardcover book for $3.99, (Under the Lilacs) two bird sculptures, and a pretty heart knick knack – all in a plastic bag for 1.99! For the sculptures I’m going to paint the coloured one white, and then paint the yellow beak on the other one white. I’m loving the scarf, wearing it right now! Has anyone read Under the Lilacs before? It has beautiful illustrations inside, ahhh so pretty! 🙂

We also found a nifty magazine holder that we’re going to try to re-create! I’ll make sure to post a DIY tutorial once we’ve made it. For now I’m saving up all my newspapers and flyers. 🙂 Here’s our sneaky photo of the holder – isn’t it great?

Hope everyone’s having a great week!  Happy New Year! 🙂

  1. here in Fredericton (NB) we have a few thrift stores i guess you could say. salvation army has 2 stores (one on the North side, and one on the South). there is also a valu-village, fredericton antipoverty association sotre (they have two), and there is a few antique stores on either side. oh there are a few ‘second time around’ type places. i like the little bird you bought, i have a box full of the ones my mom collected. as well, i am sure i got rid of some real antiques in her book collection, but they were all donated to the library (the ones they would take). the rest, sadly went to recycle bin. (i know, my bad).
happy new year and looking forward to lurking more in 2011.

    1. Yup. we mostly have value villages, salvation army, and I’m sure there’s a couple vintage/antique stores and boutiques out there too – but I haven’t had much luck finding them yet. boo! Awwe thanks, it find it cute! I’m excited to paint it and freshen it up a bit. That’s too bad about the books though! Happy New Year! 🙂

    1. Ahhh, is it any good? I loved the cover when I saw it! I really need to get more into her – I’ve only read little women so far I think? Keep smiling! 🙂

  2. looks like you got some swell scores! love those birds!!!! i think they’ll look great with a bit of touching up like you say. can’t wait to see the DIY for the mag. holder. wishing you a wondrous beginning to the new year.

    1. I sure think I did too! 🙂 I’m so excited to paint them and make the mag holder – so many projects!! Hope you’re having a great start to the new year too!! 🙂

  3. Oh Wow I LOVE LOVE LOVE “Under the Lilacs”!! One of my favs! Good find! Oh and I recieved my ornament! Its so darling and I can’t wait till next Christmas to put it up. It was adorable the way you packaged it up too. why don’t you sell on Etsy?

    1. Ahhh I’ll have to read it asap then!! 🙂 No problem! I’m glad you like it!!! – I’m thinking in a little bit I’ll start a shop up, but I just want to get a whole bunch of inventory started first. Thanks girl! 🙂

  4. you know, there are a few resale shops here and there around the city. in the spring when it’s warm out, we should definitely dress up cute and ride our bikes to little italy and check out a few that i know of : ) or if biking and waiting for spring isn’t your thing, maybe we can ask aunt pat and her car to come shopping with us ; )

    1. I figured! yeah, that’d be great – i’ve always been meaning to go down there. I’m definitely up to waiting for spring, haha. Maybe we can check them out ahead of time (in the meantime?) Let me know! 🙂

      1. so on thursday, i went for a walk on ottawa street and hit up three amazing thrift stores. now that i know how sweet these stores are, we definitely have to check out them and the rest of them (apparently there are a billion on ottawa street!) i got a bunch of sweet books, sewing patterns and sweaters for under $15 : D

  5. i was thinking the other day that value village has kind of taken away all the cute little secondhand stores i used to go to growing up. I can’t stand value village, its dirty and smelly and huge and overpriced and i never find anything good there. Near where i live i go to the Bibles for missions thrift store which is a bit better.

    1. I wish there were more secondhand stores around here, I’ll have to get out and search. hah. We have a decent value village here, and then a really gross one, but still. I figure that as long as you’re able to clean whatever you find then you’re good. I guess it depends on the person? Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂 Keep smiling!
